Another page on the calendar has turned and Alberta is starting a new month, new year, and a new decade in 2020.

A lot of resolutions have gone into effect as well and the Government of Alberta is hoping that one of yours will be to practice safe driving throughout the year.

The government says the safety of Albertans is it's number one priority.  Each year, Albertans are injured and killed in traffic collisions in the province, many of which are preventable.

2016 stats released show that 299 Albertans were killed and 16,622 injured in collisions on our roads and highways.  The tragedy of these injuries and deaths is that 85.6 percent of crashes that year involved at least one driver who committed a driving error.

Alberta Transportation Minister Ric McIver says, "To avoid tragedy in the new year, all of us need to make smart choices behind the wheel.  That means taking care of each other by driving according to the conditions, putting away distractions, and never driving impaired.  Let's make 2020 the year we all remember to drive safely to prevent tragedy on our roads."

The cost of collisions in this province is estimated to be somewhere between $4 billion and $9 billion annually.
