Two tournaments, two wins.

It was another convincing 'A' division tournament championship for the newly-formed U13 Cochrane Eagles basketball team at last weekend's Calgary Vision Classic Tournament.

The Eagles had a 79-16 win over the Ravens, of Calgary, before knocking off the CABC Kings, 66-41.in the semifinals. The Kings are an all-star team encompassing all of Central Alberta from Wetaskiwin to Olds.

Head coach Kris Nielson said they were challenged to keep their form in front of a loud crowd and adjusted to the officiating. In the end, they beat the undefeated Titans, 63-55.

"With everything stacked against our team, the guys fought through the heckling and noise from the stands, the swarming defense, the barrage of touch calls against us and the baffling no-calls at the offensive end."

The Eagles quieted the crowd when they took a 30-10 lead and held off a fourth-quarter run by the Titans.

Nielson says with the tournament win, the Eagles maintain their claim of being the number one ranked U13 boys team in the province.

Cochrane Eagles U17 Girls

The Cochrane Eagles U17 girls are still looking for their first tournament championship title in 'B' division tournament play.

In the semifinals, they played a Taber team largely composed of players from WR Myers, who won the 3A provincial basketball championship earlier this spring in Cochrane. The Taber team won 43-40.

"It was a very close game right from the opening tipoff. The score went back and forth and I really thought we outplayed them but gave up too many offensive rebounds throughout the game and we failed to capitalize from the free throw line in the fourth quarter," says Nielson.

The Eagles beat Regina in their final matchup of the tournament, 42-33.

Both teams are playing in the Chestermere Shooting Stars tournament this weekend.
