Families and friends were treated to its very own 'Stars on Ice' as Cochrane figure skaters showcased their skills, December 15.

Every other year, the Cochrane Skating Club do a full on ice show where skaters use their own creativity to pick music and design choreography for their program.

Karen Allison, Coach, says it is a fun way for skaters to show off their skills they have learned thus far.

The season so far has been coming along well, the skaters wrapped up their first competition in early December and results were great.

"Our skaters did amazing. Four out five of our ranked events ended up on the podium, that was really great to see. Our little people who get report cards, also really showed some great skating; as a coach looking at the big picture our skaters are doing very well."

In the New Year,  the club's first synchronized skating team 'The Cochrane Swift Edges' will be off to compete at the Rose Bowl in Calgary.

"We have a team of nine and we can go up to 16, so we have some room to grow. We have some committed girls on the team and they seem to be really enjoying themselves. This year is about learning and the experience because we have not done this before."

The synchro team consists of skaters aged 9-13, and because figure skating is such an individual sport it has been challenging to pull everyone together in a synchronized manner.

"It is about working together, which these skaters don't have to do on a daily basis, I think it's a really good character building opportunity for the girls as well, because it is different from what they are used to."

CanSkate and Pre-CanSkate programs will also be starting up again in the New Year which is a great way to prepare yourself for any type of skating whether it be recreationally, speed, hockey, figure, or ringette.
