The Cochrane High Cobras senior boys soccer team has advanced to the RVS divisional semifinals after a dominating 7-2 win over the Chestermere Lakers last night at the Ranger Field.

Although Chestermere finished sixth in the regular season, Cobras head coach Carolyn Mcleod wasn't about to take anything for granted.

"We were pretty confident about this game but as I said to the boys at the beginning, playoffs is a whole new season," she says. "You can't think about what happened in the regular season and go on that. You have to start with a fresh outlook because it's a must-win game."

Joe Bell, Alex Bend and Kael Bernard all scored a pair for the Cobras and Dawson Laye netted the other.

The Cobras now head to Springbank on June 4 in hopes of advancing to the divisional finals being held in Airdrie two days later.

The Cobras missed the quarterfinals bye after tying for second with Springbank in the regular season. It came down to goals against.

Mcleod expects another close matchup against the Phoenix.

Cobra Evan Temple goes for the ball against Ziz Abdillah, of the Lakers.

"They're very similar to us. They're strong from back to front, and in fact, we tied them in the regular season. It will be a challenging game."

Mcleod believes the Cobras are a more complete team this season. Scoring is coming from a cross-section of players and they've been demonstrating solid teamwork and zone play throughout the season.

"The one thing I will say about this year's team is we have more depth. Last year we had a super striker and we had a couple of little pieces here and there who were quite phenomenal, but this year we have a team through to the 20th player. Every guy is stepping up in the role that they have and are getting the job done."

"I think it will carry us further because we had a rough ride in zones last year and when you're relying on that one guy it's really tough."

The Bert Church Chargers are the top-seeded RVS team with a flawless 6-0 record. Both the Cobras and Pheonix were 4-1-1 and each suffered their only loss at the hands of the Chargers.

Cochrane hosting zones, May 30-31

It may seem like a quirky little fixture, but before divisional play resumes the ASAA zone championships are being held. Cochrane is the host and it all gets underway tomorrow morning at Ranger Field.

The Cobras have a tough one right off the hop against Canmore. They hope to get a little redemption against a team they lost to in last year's zones.

Also in the tournament are Strathmore, Springbank, Foothills, St. Joe's (Brooks) and the Holy Trinity Academy.
