As the weather gets warmer more cyclists are gearing up and getting out on Cochrane roads.

Every cyclist knows it’s important to wear a helmet, however that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to cycle safety.

Café Roubaix Bicycle Studio owner, Dan Richtor says it’s also important to remember the rules of the road.

“My argument is always just like there’s drivers that irritate us, there’s cyclists that irritate us,” he says. “I would say the best thing to do is ride the rules of the road, and ensure that you’re not disobeying the law. As a bicycle you’re just a slow moving part of traffic, so the traffic laws still apply.”

Richtor adds it’s important to bring proper equipment with you.

“Make sure you have tools and spare tubes and things like that so you can change your tire on the side of the road.”

He thinks even if someone is trying to unplug while riding, it’s important to stay connected, it could even help with insurance if an accident occurs.

“These days number one bring a phone, take your cellphone with you because you can get emergency services if you need it, or GPS. If you’re in an accident and you’re able to, take pictures, that always helps whoever’s investigating it whether that is insurance or police.”

Richtor adds there’s a few things beginners should know about.

“Whether you will enter the sport or lifestyle as a commuter, or a racer, or a long distance touring cyclist…always make sure that you have the basics, you should have a really good helmet that fits well, gloves, a few tools, and learn how to use that stuff. Also, don’t be afraid to ask when you’re a beginner, we’ve all been there”

He also has another piece of advice for all cyclists.

“Enjoy the ride, a wise man once said, ride little, ride lots, but just ride.”
