Elderly couple from B.C. victims of tragic Hwy. 1 crash

The RCMP have determined that a couple from B.C were in the car that was struck in a tragic crash along Hwy. 1 on Wednesday.

A 78-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman from the Columbia Valley were both declared deceased at the scene of the collision. 

All of the other people involved in the multi-vehicle crash were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

The cube van was being operated by a 50-year-old man from Sherwood Park. A 27-year man from Winnipeg, Man. was a passenger in that vehicle. 

The driver of the semi-truck is a 55-year-old man from Calgary.

Traffic was backed up for hours along Hwy 1. on Wednesday after an eastbound cube van veered through the median and into the westbound lanes. The cube van then collided head-on with a white car. 

Cochrane RCMP are continuing their investigation into the cause of this crash.
