Canadians everywhere can expect to hear an emergency public alert today on their radio, tv and smart phone.

This is part of a nationwide test of the system.

The exact time of the test will vary depending on the province or territory, according to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

The alerts are meant to warn Canadians of potentially life-threatening situations.

The CRTC said in a statement on Tuesday "The messages will be identified as test alerts and will not require Canadians to take action".

Here in Alberta, we can expect to receive our alert at 1:55 p.m.

Albertans are encouraged to download the Alberta Emergency Alert mobile app to ensure they receive all emergency notifications for their area.
