February 19-21 is Family Fishing Weekend in Alberta and it is wonderful opportunity to learn or revisit ice fishing in the province. During this weekend, an Alberta sportfishing license is not needed to fish in Alberta.

Jason Nixon says, "As Minister of Environment and Parks and an avid angler, I appreciate the incredible ice fishing we enjoy throughout the winter. It is a great opportunity to spend time outdoors with friends and family and create long-lasting memories."

The Family Fishing Weekend is not only a great opportunity to get out with the family into the great outdoors, but also a chance to learn more about responsible angling, proper fish handling techniques, ice safety, and understanding about endangered fish species.

The My Wild Alberta website is a good place to start when planning your next fishing trip. It includes a list of stocked water bodies and other resources for your fishing adventure.

It is important to remember that the weekend exemption does not apply to national parks where the Alberta sport fishing regulations still apply.

Minister Nixon says, “I encourage you to find some time this Family Fishing Weekend to head outside, enjoy another fishing adventure or give fishing a try for the very first time. Good luck, and I hope you reel in a big one.”
