If you've ever been interested in trying Roller Derby - here's your chance.

The Rockyview Roller Derby Association is hosting another Try It night in Cochrane.

They had nine ladies come out to the last Try It night in September and four of them joined the league.

You do need to be at least 18 years-old to try roller derby.

Participants are encouraged to show up wearing comfy workout clothes, bring a water bottle, an open mind and a friend.

The association will provide all of the equipment and the gear and will have a coach on hand to guide participants through the motions.

Sheena Galvin Aka Schlitz & Giggles is with the Rockyview Rollers and says they teach you everything you need to know and some of their best athletes had never even skated before joining the league.

She says "It is a contact sport but that's where the fresh meat program comes in. We are teaching you how to skate, how to fall properly which is a big thing. We want you to fall forward because that is where all your gear is to protect you. You have to wear a helmet, mouth guard, wrist guard, elbow pads and knee pads 100 per cent of the time."

Galvin says "We also teach you how to hit properly and how to take a hit and how to be sturdy on your skates and skate on one foot. Basically be strong in your balance and all of those techniques. Stopping is important too, checking your speed and just being in control on your skates at all times."

She says beginner skaters practice every Friday evening in Cochrane and can also practice once a week in Airdrie and the hope is to establish a team in Cochrane in 2020.

Galvin adds that it typically takes three months to graduate the "fresh meat" beginner program.

The Try It night goes on Jan 24 at 7 p.m. at Frank Wills Hall.
