Many Canadian kids young and old have grown up with fond memories of hanging out on a skating rink.

The ability to step out of the house and walk to the rink in their neighborhood is a wish come true for many of the kids and parents of the Fireside community.

With the idea of, "If we build it, they will come." Mark Brooks, La Vita Land, Community Site Supervisor , says building a rink was a way to join together members of the community.

The outdoor Fireside rink has been built for the past three years and Grant Davis, Fireside Resident, also known as the 'Rink Guy',  has offered to help out since the beginning.

"It's been the third year that we've had it. Mark Brooks from La Vita Land helps me get it going off the start and I usually throughout the winter take care of it: the flooding and the shoveling."

Davis, agrees it is a lot of work to get the ice right, but his passion and hard work is his way of paying it forward.

"I do this for the kids. Growing up and playing hockey, there were a lot of adults that sacrificed their time for us coaching and stuff like that. So, it's just my way of giving back."

Davis, and sometimes with the help of his 10-year old son, Lucas, and other members of the community, will be out flooding the ice twice a week starting from 7 or 8 P.M. until around midnight some days.

"I enjoy going out there. It's all worthwhile when you go to your door and see the kids out there having fun and playing the next day."

The property that the rink is on will eventually be owned by the Town so Davis' plan is to approach them with the idea of making it a more permanent structure.

Davis believes having the rink in their area brings kids and parents out of their warm houses in the winter and ties the community together.

"It gives a place for the kids to play. Lots of new people coming there. It's a way to meet people and kids to meet other kids."
