Councillor Susan Flowers wants to see the rebate of the seniors property tax support program increase to $750 from $500.

Flowers gave a notice of motion at last night's council meeting asking for town administration to prepare a report on the impact of increasing the rebate by $250 annually.

"The increase in 2022 Cochrane taxes will have a negative impact on those seniors who have low incomes yet want to stay in their own homes as long as possible," she states.

She would like to see the report to be completed in time for town council to debate at its July 11th meeting.

The program provides a rebate to those homeowners 60 years and older who apply and qualify through their income. The property must be in their name and be their principal residence.

For one owner on title, the income must be under $29,285 to qualify for a rebate. For two owners on title, who are considered spouses, their combined incomes must be under $47,545.

However, upon submission of involuntary separation documentation, only the income of the individual residing in the residence will be considered in the evaluation of the program application.
