Cochrane's Ashley McCool has two medals after two days of competition at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg and is competing in her third and final event today.

The 17-year-old diver was part of the duo that won Alberta's first gold medal of the games in the 3m synchro diving event, July 31, and followed that with a silver medal performance in the 3m spirngboard dive, Aug. 1. Today she's in the 1m springboard dive.

This Canada Games is only the third competition for McCool and Margo Erlam and while McCool says it wasn't their best performance but it was solid enough to win.

"It was a big accomplishment for us," says McCool. "Unfortunately we missed out at nationals for a second place medal but here we were able to grab the gold, which is super exciting because it's for Alberta. We did miss a couple of dives, so it wasn't our best performance, but it was enough for us to win, so we can't complain about that."

McCool came out on top of the preliminary round of the 3m event and was only topped by Elaena Nancy Dick, of Ontario, in the finals.

Earlier this summer, McCool struck silver at the senior summer nationals and she's especially proud of her performance there.

"I managed to put up a pretty good list there, probably one of the best lists I've ever performed."

McCool has a wealth of experience at the precision sport she embrace at 11 years old after many years in competing and training in gymnastics. She attended an all-sports camp at the Talisman Centre (now the Repsol Sport Centre) and diving was one of the sports offered. Afterwards she was approached to join the diving team and hasn't looked back. In fact, she says she's a diver 24-7 and that's alright by her.

Now six years and numerous accomplishments later, the 5'2" McCool is making her second appearance at the Canada Summer Games after getting her feet wet at the 2013 games. That time she was one of the youngest athletes and now there's been a role reversal.

"It's a completely different environment because I'm the one the people look up to now. I now know how it felt for the people in this position at the last summer games. I can talk the younger divers through it. I've grown a lot."

This will be her last Canada Summer Games, but it certainly isn't the end of her diving career. Later this month she's off to Taipei, Taiwan to compete for Canada in the FISU Games and then she's heading to Temple, AZ, where she has bis joining the Arizona State team under head coach Mark Bradshaw.

With a diver of this calibre you can't help but think Olympics. Right now though, that's not a priority.

"It's still pretty far away but it's always open in my mind. Right now I have lots to focus on in moving to Arizona and competing for them for awhile. We'll see where it takes me. I'm not sure yet, but it's always on the line."

McCool only found out this year that she's the third generation of McCools to compete in the Canada Summer Games. Both her father Brent McCool and grandfather Jim McCool have been in the games.
