The "Share the Love" fundraiser was born from a shared journey and the desire to give back.

Grade Two Glenbow School teacher, Mrs. Jessica Powers, and her student Ella Reimer share a special bond in that they are both cancer survivors.

Mrs. Powers knew she wanted to cut hair and donate it while at the same time raising funds for cancer research. She also knew that her student Ella and family were strong believers in giving back too and so a plan was created for the Share the Love fundraiser.

The fundraiser included the entire Grade Two class, the school, and beyond.

On Monday, March 14, Mrs. Powers' grade two class wore yellow, which represents support for kids with cancer, to celebrate their fundraising achievement. The pinnacle of the celebration was the hair cutting ceremony where Ella cut Mrs. Powers’ hair which was donated for wig making for cancer patients.

Between online donations and the sales from Mrs. Powers' student's handmade cards, $7,641 was raised for Kids Cancer Care and the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

For the special event, Ella brought with her, 515 beads that she has collected to symbolize her cancer journey. Different coloured beads represent the many varied procedures she has undergone in her journey from surgeries, needle pokes, tests, to overnight stays.

The entire fundraising endeavour has been a shared learning experience that has empowered everyone involved with knowledge and understanding to carry with them from here on in.

Donations will be accepted up to March 31.

Donations are still being accepted here.
