The Rocky View junior men's lacrosse teams, the Silvertips and Rage, both came away with 1-1 records in their home opening weekend in Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League (RMLL) action.

The Calgary Chill handed the Junior 'B' tier 1 Silvertips their first loss of the season, May 10, in a fast, physical game that went down to the wire. In a game that went back and forth, Matthew Dyck scored late in the second to send the teams to the dressing room tied 7-7.

Five games into the season, Noah Oakey is the Silvertips' top scorer with eight goals.

The Chill scored two quick ones early in the final stanza to regain the upper hand. With his second of the night, Ryan Gulutzan made it a one-goal game with 3:43 remaining. The Chill scored the assurance goal with 43 seconds remaining to win 10-8.

It's always a big night when the Silvertips play the Chill and head coach Derrick Henry says his team was a little nervous going into the game

"The sticks were a little too tight on offence," says Henry. " We were missing passes we don't usually miss and the defence is still learning each other."

Despite that, the Tips were competitive to the end.

"It wasn't out of our hands by any means. We still had the opportunity to win."

The Silvertips haven't beaten the Chill in years and are determined to get that monkey off their back.

"We play them three more times and I'm almost certain every guy has those games circled on the calendar."

Sunday, the Tips started slowly against the Regina Barracudas, better known as the Fish, but overpowered their opponents in the second and third period for a 9-7 win.

The Rage won their home opener. The Fish were up 2-1 after the first but four goals in both the second and third powered the Tips to victory. Matthew Dyck had a four-goal night, including two in a span of 14 seconds that put the Tips ahead for good midway through the third.

Now with a 4-1 record, the Silvertips are second in the Central division three points behind the Mountain View Mavericks with two games in hand.

Rage Shut Out Olds

The Jr. 'B' tier 2 Rage won a huge 7-0 shut out against the Olds Stingers on Friday night before losing against the undefeated Red Deer Renegades, 14-2, on Saturday afternoon.

The Rage is 2-2 after the weekend and sit fourth in the Southwest Division.

The Silvertips resume their season after May long weekend with a pair of home games against the Manitoba Blizzard on May 24 and Red Deer Rampage on May 26.

The Rage is at home on May 25 to take on the West Kootenay Timberwolves before heading to Medicine Hat the next day to face the Sun Devils.
