For girls aged 12 to 17, the Bow Valley Rugby Club is holding an introduction program just for you!

Called the “Newbie Girls Session.” Sarah Costen says everyone is welcome “The main aim of the program is to really get the girls active and get them involved in the sport. And to do that in a fun, relaxing environment, one that’s safe and non-contact. The idea of this program is that there’s no pressure, no competition, everybody is new and everybody is in the same boat.”

Registration is now open for the session that will run every Wednesday evening starting March 2 to April 3 from 7 to 8 pm in the RancheView School gymnasium.

The session will teach girls the basic rugby rules which they will be able to try out with small touch rugby games run by the program’s coaches.

Costen adds that once the program is finished, the girls who wish to do so are more than welcome to join the club and the team of their age group. “We always try to push with rugby, regardless whatever your shape, your size, your ability there is always a spot for anybody on our teams. There are no tryouts, no bench warming.”

Participants will need shorts and a tee shirt and a pair of runners. The cost for the program is $74. Costen says, “As a club, we’re really very community-minded, and we just really want to make sure the game and the sport are affordable to come.”

Costen can personally attest to the success of the newbie session as her own daughter started in it and is now returning for her fourth year and will be assisting with the upcoming introduction session for girls.
