Environment Canada meteorologists have gone through extensive video and evidence and have confirmed that we did not get a tornado near Springbank on Thursday.

On July 23, between 2:30 p.m. and 3:37 p.m. there was a rotating severe thunderstorm that passed through Calgary from the west to the east.

There was a possible report of a tornado just west of the city at 2:30 p.m., which prompted Environment Canada to issue the Tornado Warning for Cochrane and other areas around our town.

The investigation has revealed that the first event was a funnel cloud, not a tornado.

Then there was a second event reported at 2:36 p.m. that has been determined to be a gustnado.

A gustnado is a small, whirwind, which forms along an outflow from a thunderstorm.

Gustnado's are usually short-lived and they do not typically cause significant damage, but they can be dangerous if they loft debris.

If you witness any severe weather you are asked to seek out shelter and to contact Environment Canada by tagging them at #ABstorm, emailing at abstorm@canada.ca or calling them at 1 (800) 239-0484.
