With all the zone qualifiers completed, the Zone 2 Big Country team has been rounded out for the 55+ Alberta Summer Games being held in Medicine Hat, July 4 to 7.

On May 29, two bocce teams were added to the list of qualifying participants. Four teams competed for the spots available for 55+ and 70+ categories at the zone qualifier in Cochrane.

Representing Big Country in Medicine Hat are: 55+ team, Myrna Fink, Monique MacKenzie, Yvonne Mitchell, all from Cochrane, and Debra Michel of Gleichen; and 70+ team, Lee Smith and Peggy Stockwell, of Sundre, and Anita Coates and Lloyd Praud of Cremona.

Cyclist Clint Docken, of Bragg Creek, and athletics competitor Ray Ryan have since joined the list of those heading to Medicine Hat.

Several area slo-pitch players will also be representing Big Country. The 55+ team includes Greg Martin, Reg MacDonald, Dean Pederson and Glen Skrabek, of Cochrane and Bruce Hall, Terry McKechnie and Patrick Scherger of Airdrie.The 65-plus team roster includes Pat Drinnan (Bearspaw). Dan Muhlbach and Darrel Tetz (Cochrane) and Chris Mann (Airdrie). Nick Radmanovich and Ralph Gardeski, both from Cochrane, are on the 70+ team.

About 1,000 participants from across Alberta are expected for the games to enjoy 15 different activities.

While some will returning with medals, the overarching aim of Alberta 55+ is to encourage participation in physical and social activities. They help facilitate some 30 sporting, recreational and arts/crafts/creative writing activities through the course of the year.

"Big Country" is one of eight geographical zones. Cochrane is part of its area seven, which includes the western half of Rocky View County (Bearspaw, Cochrane, Bragg Creek and Springbank).
