A new prenatal program is being offered to families who may be facing financial hardship, emotional concerns, isolation or thos who are young parents.

Alberta Health Services has joined up with the Western Rocky View Parent Link Centre led by FCSS to offer the Cochrane Prenatal Health Group classes to pregnant moms before and after birth.

Carrie Collier, AHS, Prenatal Programs Area Manager, says it is important for the baby’s development that expectant moms from all walks of life have the right information and support during pregnancy.

“We wanted to have a place where those moms-to-be could come together and access important prenatal information as well as nutrition support. We know that early prenatal support and connections among moms can really be beneficial to ongoing prenatal development, also for infant development and early parenting.”

The program is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada so there is no cost to the participants.

The classes are offered on an ongoing basis and cover what to expect during labour and birth, prenatal nutrition, breastfeeding and also how access to community resources and supports.

Collier says it is an interactive program which covers any issues the group has questions or concerns about.

“They can say hey, one thing I really need to learn about is the area of breast feeding for example and how to get the best latch with my baby and attachment with my baby and we’ll go over those key points and build on their knowledge and strength as well.”

The class is not just for first times moms, but mothers, who already have kids, can bring along their toddler to the class too.
