Kimmett Cup will look a lot different in 2021.

Instead of the annual pond hockey tournament, organizers are hosting the first ever Kimmett Cup Street Hockey Tournament on Sept.12.

Back in February the annual event was put on hold because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Reid Kimmett says "We held out hope and kind of adjusted plans numerous times trying to hold a winter event in its traditional format but COVID and government regulations just didn't have that in the cards so we then kind of moved to, how can we still hold the Kimmett Cup in 2021 and still put names on the trophy and still raise money for charities that need it, so we came up with the idea to do road hockey."

It wasn't a completely new idea.

"It's something that people have brought up to us over the years, suggesting we should hold an annual road hockey tournament too in the summer and having two events per year, and we've always felt that was biting off a little more than we could chew, but this year COVID kind of forced us to give it a try, so we're excited about doing something new."

The tournament will be similar in some ways.

"So we want it to look and feel like a regular Kimmett Cup. So it's going to be three-on-three without goalies. Co-ed teams and then we have multiple divisions, kind of for every skill level from very skilled hockey players down to people that it's their first time holding a stick. There's something for everyone, something for all ages to participate in as well."

If you sign up before July 18 you can save $50.

"We kept the registration fee really low again with sensitivity towards the difficult times that many people are in right now. It's only $100 for a team under the early bird. So it kind of covers the cost of the performance t-shirt that each person is going to get."

As always, Kimmett says they'll be raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Children's Cottage Society.

"We've been excited to have something on the calendar, something to look forward to and we're just really looking forward to Sept. 12."
