Interest in naming the future trail from Calgary to Cochrane has been staggering.

The launch of a major naming campaign has exceeded all expectations, according to Dan Kroffat, of the steering committee.

In early January, they had a little over 100 suggestions, and he anticipated a new awareness campaign would climb that number to somewhere between 300 and 500.

There are now over 1,100 suggestions and counting, less than a week before the contest closes on Feb. 17.

"This has become a runaway train," says Kroffat. "We've got over 1,100 entries so far, and it certainly proved to us that Albertans have an appetite for contests.

"What I really like is this has always been a people's project," he continues, "so having Albertans engaged in this and sending in their suggestions tells us that we're really on the right track."

They're now seeking panelists to select the name. After a decision is reached, the winner will enjoy a one-night Canmore get-away and receive naming recognition at the Trail Head location as a lasting legacy.

He says the steering committee will remain at arm's length from the selection panel.

"We don't want to bias or prejudice the views of these individuals who will determine the name that is most appropriate."

The trail project is being coordinated by the Cochrane Rotary Club and was launched with a splash on Nov. 30.

It's part one of a long-term vision of completing a trail between Calgary and Canmore with the hopes of becoming part of the Trans Canada Trail.

Trails of this magnitude not only offer recreational opportunities for hikers and cyclists but are known to build commerce and attract visitors, he says.

Kroffat says there are plenty of other exciting things coming down the road. They're in the early stages of discussing a bikeathon with cyclists in the region, and it's been decided the proceeds of the 2nd Annual Mayor's Invitational Golf Tournament will go towards the trail's completion.
