This Saturday is all about partying down to help out puppies, cats and more.

The Hair of the Dog fundraiser has become a staple Cochrane event and is celebrating an important milestone this year.

“It all started 10 years ago with one of our local Realtors, Kendra Watt,” explains organiser Melanie Babineau. “When one of her dogs, Osa, passed away, she decided to have a little party in Osa’s memory, and it has just evolved from there.”

The event is all about raising funds for the Cochrane and Area Humane Society and over the past decade, it has become a major benefactor for the shelter.

“If we look at the event over the last 10 years, we've raised well over $275,000.”

Attendees can expect a delicious dinner, live band, live and silent auction, raffle tickets for prizes and a 50/50 draw.

“This is a jeans and T-shirt type event. Dress up if you want to, but it’s super casual.”

“In the silent auction, we have lots of gift certificates for local businesses, restaurants, massages and medical spas. We also have some dog beds that are not your standard dog beds as well as some really unique birdhouses.”

Last year’s event raised $53,000 for the Humane Society and Babineau says every cent is needed right now.

“It's so crucial. The Humane Society doesn't receive government funding, so they receive their funding from donations from events like this. They also do get money from grants, but support from the community is what keeps the doors open.”
