Plantlife is poised to become Cochrane's first cannabis retail store after recently being granted a licence by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC).

Plantlife operations manager Ian Scott says they will have the authority to place their first order next Monday. That will clear the way for a late July, early August opening at their 25-31 Bow Street Common location.

The town has granted approval for several cannabis retail stores but none can open until a licence is received from the provincial authority. AGLC initially curtailed the number of licences issued due to a lower than anticipated supply of cannabis.

Now 176 licences have been granted provincewide, including 39 locations in Calgary. Airdrie has recently had four more licences approved adding to the one store OKed earlier.

Plantlife has AGLC approval for nine locations across Alberta, including Okotoks, Chestermere, Airdrie, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Spruce Grove and Lloydminster. Four of them are open, all in northern Alberta.
