A group of Cochranites spent the weekend shopping for school supplies and loading up backpacks to give away.

Paul Singh he and his friends wanted to do something helpful for families in need.

"Friends came up with the idea to help families in these tough times, so people's families would really appreciate the help with school supplies. So, people donated some stuff and contributed one way or the other, and we bought 20 backpacks."

Singh says they packed the backpacks up with everything you need to start school next week.

"It has crayons, hand sanitizer, some tissue, some paper and binders. Everything included like that."

The kids who will receive the backpacks range in age from Kindergarten all the way up to highschool.

"All of the families are in Cochrane. People nominated them. We put a post on Facebook as a community thing, that if you know of a family who could use some help, please nominate a family."

Singh says they will hand the backpacks out to the local kids on Wednesday.
