Saturday was the kickoff in the month-long ParticiPACTION Community Better Challenge.

Lisa Hyde, Marketing & Communications Manager for SLS Centre said it's a great opportunity for the community to showcase just how active Cochrane residents truly are.

"It's about getting Cochrane active and being crowned the most active community in Canada. That's kind of the nuance behind it and we're trying to get everybody in the community to get active, sign up and take the pledge to get active, and there's a bundle of cash in it for Cochrane as well.

If Cochrane ranks the highest, $100,000 will be rewarded to the Town of Cochrane to be used for local recreation facilities.

"You can register as an individual or an organization and it can be a church group, it could be a business or a local gym. We're just asking everyone to get behind this so we can be crowned the most active in Canada."

The challenge is open to everyone, and all activity tracked from June 1 to 30 will be counted towards the total score.

SLS Centre will log its patrons’ activity throughout the month:

• Seniors’ Week: June 3-9 - morning fitness classes are free for those aged 60+

• Free Public Swim - June 8, 7-9 p.m. courtesy Cochrane Home Treasures

• Sport 4 Life Try It Day: June 9 - youth are invited to try volleyball, martial arts, climbing, scuba, boxing, rugby and more

• Fitness Classes: All classes in June count towards the challenge
