Designated smoking areas may soon be established at the SLS Centre and Cochrane Arena.

The first reading was given to a proposed bylaw amendment that would see a select number created, all at least 5 metres away from public entrances.

Town councillor Susan Flowers made the motion for first reading.

"And, I'd just want to say, I think it's brilliant to make the change," said Flowers.

The smoking ban was put in place in 2017 and has proven to be unenforceable and has only created conflict. People continued to smoke, and with no designated areas, some puff away near the public entrances.

The change falls in line with smoking restrictions required elsewhere in Cochrane.

It will return to council for second and possibly third reading at a future meeting.

Community Services director Mitchell Hamm presented the idea to town council at its Apr. 3rd committee-of-the-whole meeting. No objections were raised at that time.
