Environment Canada has issued a snow squall watch for Cochrane and the surrounding areas.

The national weather service says a cold front will bring pockets of intense snowfall and strong northwesterly winds to southern Alberta on Sunday night and Monday morning.

As a result visibility could be reduced to near zero for brief periods of time because of the wind and snowfall.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common.

The snow squall watch is also in effect for:

  • Mountain View Co. near Carstairs and Stirlingville
  • Mountain View Co. near Cremona and Water Valley
  • Mountain View Co. near Olds and Didsbury
  • Mountain View Co. near Sundre
  • Rocky View Co. near Airdrie and Crossfield
  • Rocky View Co. near Bottrel and Madden

We are also under a Wind Warning in Cochrane.

Strong winds gusting up to 100 km/h will continue today along the eastern slopes of the rocky mountains.

These strong westerly winds will then move eastward through the Calgary area as well as along the international border.

The strong wind gusts are expected to persist throughout the day and into Sunday evening.

Environment Canada is warning that these strong winds could cause damage to buildings such as to roof shingles and windows.

Other communities included in the Wind Warning include:

  • Mountain View Co. near Carstairs and Stirlingville
  • Mountain View Co. near Cremona and Water Valley
  • Mountain View Co. near Olds and Didsbury
  • Mountain View Co. near Sundre
  • Rocky View Co. near Airdrie and Crossfield
