The medals have all been awarded, most of the athletes have returned home.

Now the City of Airdrie and the 2020 Alberta Winter Games Committee has nothing to do but bask in the satisfaction of a hugely successful four days of sport and celebration that just wrapped up in the city.

The Chair of the 2020 Alberta Winter Games, Shauna Quinn, said she couldn't be happier with the way the games turned out.  "It has been amazing.  I am just so impressed and happy with our planning team and all the volunteers and everyone who's been involved in these games from the spectators to the parents and especially the athletes.  We haven't had any glitches.  We're all kind of looking at each other and saying 'wow, this was fantastic.'  It's just been an amazing experience."

Quinn said attendance at all the venues was far better than they anticipated.  Before the games started they had some numbers from previous games but Quinn said Airdrie crushed those numbers, to the point where many people were asking, 'how do we even get in on time?'

Quinn said the support of people for the games has been amazing and extremely gratifying.  Particularly, she said, the comments the committee has received on social media platforms.

"They've been putting it on our Facebook.  They're impressed with the planning, the friendly people, the good nature Airdrie has.  I mean those are kind of common to us out here but to know that people also had a seamless experience.  The compliments are coming on social media instead of the opposite so that means a lot to us."

Now, the committee will be putting their feet up and relaxing.....or, maybe not.  Quinn said more work is on the way as the committee debriefs and prepares reports.  "We all have responsibilities to create post games reports so we can help transfer this knowledge to future host communities.  Of course, there's all the financials and reporting that come along with that.  It's not an easy task that ends tomorrow, that's for sure."

Quinn said they've already done a quick review of the games and no one could come up with a single thing that they would do differently.  "Things have really worked out in all departments.  I was just talking with some representatives from the province who were complimenting the transportation planning and the foodservice.    There's always little things to iron out, but at the end of the day things went really well."

This is the second time Airdrie has hosted an Alberta Games.  The city previously hosted the 2014 Alberta Summer Games.
