The buildup of ice along the Bow River is pretty to look at from a safe distance but the Town of Cochrane is warning residents of its extreme danger.

Thanks to the deep freeze last week and the fluctuating water levels on the river it has created very dangerous conditions.

A buildup of ice has formed ice shelves that protrude over the water which can lead to void spaces because of the flow patterns under the ice.

The town is warning everyone to stay off the ice. This includes making sure children and pets are not near the edge of the river.

The ice is not stable and any amount of weight could cause the ice to break and fall off.

If a person falls through the ice, you should call 911 immediately.
