Traffic in Cochrane can be backed up on many weekends but then throw in 6,000-10,000 tourists to the mix.

With Rogers Home Town Hockey being three weeks away, the Town of Cochrane is coming up with plans to hopefully mitigate some traffic congestion.

Suzanne Gaida, Town of Cochrane, Senior Manager Community Services, says a local committee has been created to look at traffic accommodation and shuttles for the event.

"We are really trying to ensure, for example, we are going to look at parking offsite and shuttling people to the event. We are looking at making sure it is in the area close to Spray Lakes, so we are talking to a number of businesses who aren't necessarily open on weekends to ask if we are able to use their parking areas and provide shuttle buses to try and keep people in the same quadrant where the rec centre is."

Gaida adds shuttle buses will also be coming from many Cochrane communities to help keep local people off the roads coming to the event.

"It is going to be busy, there is nothing we can say about it. When we talked to Home Town they estimate 5-8000 people over the weekend coming to the event."

Gaida says while it may seem like a lot, many of our local events such as Labour Day Parade and Light Up score larger crowds.

Home Town Hockey representatives say most people that attend are from the local area, but with Calgary not hosting, Gaida says there could be some spill over.

"We are hoping there is an economic driver to this with our businesses and restaurants."

As the event gets closer, campaigns will be created to build excitement and share information on how everyone can enjoy the event safely and stress free.
