A multigenerational crowd overflowed onto the street to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom this morning at the Community Cenotaph.

It was a welcomed return to an in-person Remembrance Day ceremony of the Royal Canadian Legion we were unable to enjoy last year.

Emcee Darla Gullons, past president of the Cochrane Legion, referenced the turmoil caused by the pandemic in her emotional message on the 100th anniversary of the poppy being Canada's symbol of remembrance.

"And then I think about the young men who went one step further and gave up their lives so they could protect their loved ones. That is the ultimate sacrifice, far and above anything we've endured over the last year and a half. And this bright vibrant flower has become a symbol of the durability of humanity, that even destruction and death cannot hold us down, that we are survivors no matter what is thrown at us, just like this simple little poppy."

In closing, she said it was heart-warming that the community was able to gather.

"It's a simple tribute towards those who gave their lives for their country, and those who currently serve this country so that you may be able to enjoy the freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion."
