Cochrane Home Treasures has been a heavy hitter in support of so many worthy local causes for nearly two decades, but this year's contribution deserves an exclamation mark.

In 2021, donations totalled a jaw-dropping $215,500! Previous to this, their record amount was $125,000.

"That is all thanks to Cochrane and surrounding communities because they donate their goods to us and we're able to resell them," says Home Treasures manager Cayley Breeze. "We've got great stuff because we have a great community here."

She believes a couple of factors have helped spike their sales over the past year.

"I think our new location has made it easier for people to come shopping and easier for them to donate, so there's less of a hassle. And I think that due to COVID, people have been maybe trying to save a little more and have been conscious of their purchases, so we're seeing more people come and spend money in the second-hand industry."

A total of 28 local causes were supported in 2021. Among the most recent was a $25,000 donation to the Helping Hands Society of Cochrane and Area to help purchase a cargo van for its moving and food rescue programs. Home Treasures also provided $15,000 to make Cochrane Light Up a reality this year after organizers had originally decided to cancel the event.

The nonprofit family thrift shop is built upon the strong foundation of giving back to the community. It quickly evolved from a concept of the Cochrane's Women's Housing Committee in May 2002. October that same year, the original store opened with the assistance of the Cochrane Family and Community Support Services. It's been nonprofit from day one and is operated by the Treasures for Your Home Society.

Last fall, they expanded into their bigger and better location at 208 5th Ave. (some may refer to it as the old Sears building).
