Cochrane's Sarah Wozniewicz is among the 28 female hockey players who are one step closer to representing Alberta at the U18 national championship.

She was also one of two Cochrane players named last week to selection camps for national teams.

Today, Hockey Alberta released its shortlist roster for the Team Alberta U18 Female squad that will participate in the 2019 U18 National Championships in Morden and Winkler, MB. She was one of 16 forwards shortlisted.

Wozniewicz, 15, was a member of Alberta's gold medal team in the Canada Winter Games earlier this year. She was the team's top scorer in the tournament, including the overtime goal that put them in the gold medal final.

Players were selected to the shortlist based on their overall play throughout the Team Alberta scouting process, past Team Alberta programs, and at the U18 Summer Camp in Red Deer, July 9-14. Cochrane defensive player Bailey Fiala was also selected to participate in the July camp.

“The talent and character of these players always makes it tough to select a shortlist, but we are very confident in the 28 players we have selected,” said Kendall Newell, Female Hockey manager. “We look forward to seeing all of these players again in September for fall camp.”

The shortlisted players will be scouted with their club teams in the fall and participate in a final selection camp, Sept. 27-29. The 2019 U18 National Championship Tournament runs Nov. 3-9 in Morden and Winkler, MB.

A week earlier it was announced Wozniewicz will participate in the BFL National Women's U18 selection camp.

Cochrane goalie Kirsten Chamberlin was also selected to participate in BFL National Women’s Development Team selection camp.

Kirsten Chamberlin

Chamberlin, 21, has been between the pipes for the University of Alberta Pandas for the last three seasons and posted a perfect 11-0 record in the 2018-19 regular season and a conference-best six shutouts. She ended the season with an impressive 0.57 GAA and 0.963 save percentage. The Pandas went on to win the USports' Canada West championship.

Previously to that, she developed her game during four seasons at the Edge School.

Both camps run concurrently at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary from Aug. 2 to 11. The selected players will compete in a pair of three-game series against the United States in Lake Placid, NY, Aug. 14-17.
