An Alberta Wide Rally is taking place on Saturday, November 5.

Todd Beasley, Managing Director, of the Alberta Wide Rally Movement, says Albertans from around the province will be coming together in a one of a kind rally.

"The Alberta Wide Rally is a grassroots movement created in Alberta; by the people, for the people. Simple call on the web has created a movement where we will be holding simultaneous rallies in 12 centres across the province which includes: Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Camrose, Drayton Valley, Edmonton, Hanna, Red Deer, Airdrie, Calgary, Brooks, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat"

Beasley, adds although other community concerns such as the farm bill or education bill will be addressed, the primary focus of the rally is to take a stand against the impending carbon tax.

"Although we as a movement are not against the tax, as individuals within the movement, we certainly are. Frankly, it's the manner in which this legislation is being implemented both federally and provincially which we take particular offense to. We as a group, and we're pretty confident that the majority of the country feel the exact same way, that a carbon tax has not been properly explained."

The grassroots movement believe that both the Alberta Notley and Trudeau federal government do not have a mandate from the people to adopt legislation which will have such massive societal change as which is contemplated by the carbon tax.

"This legislation could have massive implications for generations to come, we believe that it will seriously erode Alberta and Canada's competitiveness, and adding a significant new taxation when we as society can least afford is not just irresponsible, but just plain cruel."

Beasley, adds if the Notley government feels that implementing a carbon tax is the right move then they should have no problem going to the people and asking for a mandate to a plebiscite or referendum.

"Let the people hear the facts and allow them to make an informed decision and truly let them say if they support this or not, that's democracy."

The overall purpose of the rally is to support a petition.

"Our goal is to have a minimum 500,000 people sign a properly constituted and properly submitted petition, our stretch goal is for one million Alberta signatures. We will then submit this to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, once it's submitted, will be in a standing session and we can put pay to the argument that the NDP government does not have support of the people on this issue."

The grassroots movement believes the NDP government will ignore the petition and says they will then push to make this a hot button issue for the next election.

The Alberta Wide Rally movement is a non partisan group and welcomes everyone. The rally kicks off in Calgary, at the McDougall Centre, at 12 pm on November 5.

If you are unable to attend but would like to sign the petition you can do so here and more information on the movement can be found at Alberta Wide Rally.
