Fire crews remain on-site at the Ramada Hotel in West Valley, as they continue to work on a fire that started at around 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Fire Inspector Jeff Avery with Cochrane Fire Services says it was all hands on deck yesterday, with reinforcements called in from the surrounding areas.

"At the peak of the fire we had 10 trucks [on site]," explains Avery. Those trucks were from Cochrane, Redwood Meadows, Rockyview and Calgary and we had 35 firefighters on scene."

Avery says that heavy winds have been working against them.

"We still currently have our aerial on the scene getting some hotspots," explains Avery. "There were a few flare-ups throughout the night with this strong wind, so we're currently working on that. It doesn't look like the wind is going to die down anytime soon so we're going to be here most of the day again just hitting hotspots and keep doing that until we have a chance to have a look inside."

Avery says it's been an uphill battle against the wind since the fire began.

"There would be a point where we knew we had it under control," explains Avery. "Then the wind gusts would pop up and there were just the flames shooting out on the other side of the hotel."

With heavy winds persisting today and forecasted into the evening Avery expects that it will be a touch a go scenario again today.

He says that while a significant dent has been made in the Glen Eagles reservoir, the water supply is being closely monitored.

"Cochrane is definitely in no danger of running out of water," Avery reassured. "But Waterworks came in and assessed the situation and they're working on that right now."

Avery says that air quality isn't a concern as they're not dealing with heavy, black smoke today. Some nearby businesses have reopened including the Tim Horton's and Super 8 hotel, however, a portion of West Valley Drive remains closed.

Avery anticipates that the hotel is going to be a total loss.
