A deadly drug has hit the streets of Alberta and is unforgiving.

Carfentanil, designed to sedate large animals like moose or elephants, has made its way to Alberta. The extremely powerful opiod is 100 times more powerful than fentanyl and is undetectable by sight, smell or taste.

According to Calgary Police Service, there is no way to tell if someone is buying fentanyl or carfentanil, making it more dangerous and deadly. Currently, fifteen carfentanil related deaths have occured in Alberta this year and that number is expected to rise.

Staff Sergeant, Martin Schivetta, Calgary Police Service, says the appearance of this drug is the most deadly epidemic ever experienced in Alberta.

Sgt. Schivetta, states because of legal production of fentanyl in China, it is very easy to smuggle into Canada.

"Anytime you are consuming fentanyl or carfentanil you are playing russian roulette with your life"

One kilogram of carfentanil will produce 50 million lethal doses; because the carfentanil has a much higher profit margin and is easy to hide, it is being used more to cut into other street drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine.

Schivette can't stress enough this is something to take very seriously.

"Everyone in Alberta needs to be aware this drug is on the streets and is being placed into the counterfeit oxycodone tablets, which are called beans, and sell for $20 a tablet with each one having an inconsistent level of carfentanil. Any tablet can be deadly. Even your first tablet can be your last. Fentanyl kills and no one ever knows exactly what they are consuming."
