A man in his 20s suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a train on the Stoney Nakoda Nation yesterday.

EMS Spokesperson, Stuart Brideaux says that the man was discovered lying by the tracks by a Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway conductor, who then called EMS.

"A little before 2 p.m. EMS was made aware by a CP Rail worker that they'd come across an injured man next to the rail line through the area of Stoney Nakoda just North of Highway 1 and near Highway 40," explains Brideaux.

He says that although the man was discovered shortly before 2 p.m. it's believed he was struck by a different train earlier in the day.

"When they were able to stop the train and walk back and access the patient they determined that he had sustained very significant injuries," explains Brideaux. "However, presumably, as a result of contact by a different train, likely earlier in the day; perhaps as early as 9 a.m."

The victim sustained serious injuries which Brideaux says aligns with an earlier timeline. Several first responders arrived on the scene before airlifting the man to hospital.

"Ground EMS responded along with Kananaskis Emergency Services, RCMP and STARS," explains Brideaux. "STARS Air Ambulance flew the patient to Foothills Hospital in serious and potentially life-threatening condition with very significant injuries."

At this time the events leading up to the accident are unknown, and the investigation continues.
