What should you do if you hit an animal on the road?

Ryan Lemont, manager of driver education with the Alberta Motor Association (AMA), says personal safety is the first concern.

"Move your vehicle over somewhere safe. Turn the hazards on."

If any passengers are hurt, you should call 911 right away.

Providing everyone's alright, the other reason for reaching out to inform the authorities would be in case you were unable to drive your vehicle away from the scene.

Someone might be able to come out and provide that extra protection and visibility while waiting on the side of the road for a tow truck.

"You might want to give Fish and Wildlife a call if the animal you hit appears to be injured but might be alert. Really, it's just to deal with the hazard there that's on the roadway."

It's not a good idea to approach the animal.

"If it's wounded, they could be scared, and they could harm you."

After that, you would want to report the incident to your insurance company from a safe location.

"Try to keep that safe mindset. You might be on the side of the road, there could still be vehicles coming by, so you want ot make sure you're visible while you're out there."
