A suspect was shot by a police officer during a confrontation near Cochrane on Tuesday. 

According to the RCMP the incident happened following a traffic stop in a rural area at 5:08 p.m.

The officer attempted to arrest a suspect following a routine traffic stop.

Mounties report the suspect vehicle then collided with the police vehicle, sparking a confrontation that ended with an RCMP officer firing their gun.

The suspect suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. 

Neither the officer or any members of the public were injured. 

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has launched an investigation.

The RCMP are also conducting an internal review saying "Events like this are difficult for everyone involved." in a news release. 

"RCMP training, policy, police response, and the officer’s duty status will be subject to review.

"The RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT."
