In light of Cochrane's recent tragic events, the first of a three-part speaker series will occur tomorrow evening (May 30).

Jennifer Sachkiw, Executive Director of Cochrane and Area Victim Services says tomorrow's talk about grief and loss will lead the series, followed by domestic violence and sexual assault.

This is the first time the Cochrane chapter has held an event like this, and if successful, it could lead to more down the road. "Creating some more awareness about Victim Services, how we support the community in that nature and how we are bringing awareness to these particular topics. If all goes well, we'll continue, depending on how it's received in the community."

With Cochrane's share of recent tragedy, it seemed fitting to discuss the thought process and emotions you may deal with when it comes to grief and loss. "Are the feelings that I am having normal, or I am thinking of these kinds of thoughts, or I am just suffering as a result of a loss; actually understanding that how you are feeling is normal and if you understand more of what you are going through you may be able to identify it."

With more education and knowledge, the hope is attendees will learn it is okay to talk about grief and sadness so, in turn, they can teach others it is okay to ask. "The more educated on being able to support or gaining support, the more supported you will feel."

Nadine Gariépy-Fisk of Hospice Calgary Sage Centre has been commissioned to speak about grief and loss after our local organization saw her presentation at the Alberta Victim Services biannual conference.

While no dates have been confirmed yet for talks on domestic violence and sexual assault, Sachkiw, shares they will occur before the end of 2018.

Tomorrow evening's talk is open community-wide, free for attendees and occurring at the Cochrane RancheHouse in the Hall of Vision from 7 to 8:30 pm.

If you reserve your spot HERE ahead of time you will receive a free gift bag, however, pre-registration is not required.

May 27th to June 2nd also marks the annual awareness week 'Victims and Survivors of Crime Week'.
