A 21-year-old man from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation has been charged with second degree murder following the death of a six-month-old baby.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit arrested Tyriq Lyman Kootenay on Sept. 1.

Kootenay has been charged second degree murder in relation to the death of the infant.

He has also been charged with assault causing bodily harm and choking with intent in relation to an incident involving a 24-year-old woman from a previous incident. 

The Stoney Nakoda RCMP responded to a residence on Aug. 25 for a welfare check on the infant.

When RCMP entered the house, they located the infant deceased.

Family members have identified the victim as Tanayah Hunter-Kootenay.

Kootenay has been remanded in custody and will appear in Cochrane Provincial Court on Oct. 5 on all charges.
