Like most Albertans, the operational staff of the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre (SLSFSC) is still processing the latest COVID measures announced by the province.

In an effort to ease the strain on the healthcare system aggressive measures are once again being implemented provincewide.

A letter from CEO Blair Felesky states that the operational staff is currently reviewing how the latest measures will impact the facility. He says "SLSFSC acknowledges the latest government announcement. We will formally respond to our community by tomorrow (Friday) at noon upon taking the time today to review and understand this latest announcement."

The local sports centre has been hit hard with closures and restrictions over the past 19 months. It has been a tough road to navigate for both operators and facility users and now, as Alberta enters its fourth wave, it's back to the drawing board.

In his letter, Felesky goes on to ask for patience from the public while they work out the next steps.

"We respectfully ask that you do not contact Guest Services with questions related until we can provide better clarity," writes Felesky. "It will take some time today for our team to review, understand and align."

According to the Government of Alberta website, unless a sports and fitness facility implements the 'Restrictions Exemption Program' the following restrictions will be in effect.

  • Indoor group classes and activities are not permitted.
  • Indoor competitions are paused except where vaccine exemptions have been granted.
  • Indoor one-on-one training and solo activities are allowed with 3-metre physical distancing.

Businesses that apply for the Exemption Program can continue to operate as usual with facility users showing proof of vaccination or a negative rapid test. Operating restrictions will be implemented for all other businesses.
