New layout brings fresh challenge to Cochrane Disc Golf
Cochrane’s disc golf course is getting a makeover, thanks to the work of local volunteers, the Town of Cochrane and members of the Cochrane Disc Golf Club. The course at Riverfront Park has seen big changes since construction for water mains altered access to part of the land. That pushes the club to rethink the layout. “We’ve moved a couple of the baskets around just to make it a bit safer,” says Calvin Ottoson with the club. “We even built a nice raised basket and platform that adds a bit more challenge to your putt.” “There’s a whole bunch of construction still being cleaned up, so we had to adjust the layout and put in new signs. "About two thirds of the holes are now completely new.” The club is now looking for help finishing the upgrades. That includes digging holes, spreading mulch, moving dirt and building platforms. “We’re just trying to get as many volunteers as possible to come out and help, every bit of help makes a difference.” Weekday work is happening in the late afternoons and evenings. Weekend work depends on the weather. “People can message us through the Cochrane Area Disc Golf Facebook page,” says Ottoson. The club also has long-term plans in the works. Once construction is fully cleared, they hope to reopen two more holes and expand the course. “Hopefully in a year or two, we’ll be able to add some more obstacles, mandos and alternate tee locations.” “That will let us turn a 9-hole course into 18 unique experiences.” Even with limited space, the goal is to make the course more challenging for experienced players and still welcoming for beginners. “We’re planning three versions of the course,” Ottoson explains. “One family friendly, one with hazard markers for moderate players, and one with island holes for advanced play.” RELATED STORIES: New disc golf baskets installed in Riverfront Park Disc golf gaining popularity in Cochrane Registration opens for Cochrane’s first disc golf tournament Disc golf continues to grow across Alberta, with new courses popping up in Calgary and tournaments gaining popularity. “I’ve made some of my closest friends just throwing discs on a Wednesday night,” says Ottoson. “It’s a great way to get outside and meet people.”
