Residents of Cochrane and the surrounding areas are coming together to help support the family of David Lertzman.

The University of Calgary Professor was tragically killed by a bear in the Waiparous area on May 4, leaving to mourn his wife Sarah, and two young children - nine-year-old Glen and five-year-old Mela.

Kari Woo is a friend of the Lertzman family and she says that the family has deep roots in Cochrane.

"David actually worked down in the Ghost River with a program called Rediscovery," says Woo. "Cochrane is their kind of their go-to resource. They participate in activities at the rec centre, they're involved in the karate club here and Glen goes to the French Immersion School in town here."

Woo has set up a GoFundMe Fundraiser to help ease some of the burden for David's family.

"In the face of this tragic event it's really a small gesture that we're able to do for the family," says Woo. "Maybe, hopefully, provide for them in the uncertain times to come."

Woo's aim is to gather a general emergency relief fund for Sarah and the kids to use at their discretion in the short or long term.

Since launching the fundraiser just five days ago, 155 generous donors have already contributed more than $20,000 to aid the Lertzman family.

Woo says that the outpouring of love and support is a true testament to who David was.

"It's just amazing. It's really astonishing to see what his legacy is," says Woo. "He was a magical being. I don't ever remember him misspeaking about anybody and he knew a lot of people. He left people with the feeling of encouragement and positivity and I think an inspiration to do better in this world."
